THE AMAZING ADVENTURES OF JIMMY CRIKEY
Twelve-year-old Jimmy was an Attalian alien stranded on Earth after his ambassador parents died because of human viruses. Raised by kindly Aunt Ethel, he was bullied for his pointed ears, silver-blue eyes, and huge feet. The neighbourhood kids dubbed him “Jimmy Crikey,” a name he despised. Convinced he would never belong, Jimmy ran away into the forest to find a place that would accept him. In his midnight flight, he fell into Roombelow, a small town hidden in a subterranean world, and accidentally broke the sleeping spell that had frozen the town for many years. He was hailed a hero, and was ‘adopted’ by the mayor. He befriended Gemma, a mysterious girl who lives at the bottom of the town well and cannot remember how she got there. For the first time, Jimmy feels wanted.
But Roombelow was in crisis. The water supply failed, earthquakes shook the caverns, and one-eyed trolls raided from the mountain peaks. When Gemma was kidnapped by traders who want to sell her as a “curiosity” because she looks different, Jimmy realised what it costs to be an outcast. He uses newly discovered Attalian energy powers to outwit the troll chief and rescue Gemma during a violent sea storm, with help from a water witch and a pod of dolphins. Gemma was returned home to Roombelow— but she still doesn’t know where “home” is.
When Jimmy visited Aunt Ethel to ket her know that all is well, she revealed that Jimmy’s parents had left him a starship, hidden in the forest. He can return to his birth planet, Attalia, to find his true family. Torn, Jimmy left Roombelow, promising Gemma he would once he knew who he was.
The voyage turned deadly. Warlord Kursh of planet Ock attacked the ship, forcing Jimmy to eject in a life pod. Attalians rescued him, and President Alpha welcomed him, only for Jimmy to learn he had no surviving family. Worse, Kursh invaded Attalia through a time warp, vowing to enslave the planet.
Jimmy has a choice: return to Earth as a bullied alien, or risk everything for a world he’s never known. He chose to stay and fight. Using his energy powers and the AI knowledge of XRU, his portable starship navigator, Jimmy devised a plan to collapse the time warp. He succeeded in stranding Kursh in nether space and freeing Attalia. The Attalians offered him his parents’ seat on the High Council — a home, a title, a people who look like him, but Jimmy turned the offer down.
He returned to Roombelow, to Aunt Ethel, to Gemma, to the kids who once called him “Crikey” as an insult and now cheer it as his hero name. He realised that home isn’t DNA or planets. It’s where people fight for you, and you fight for them. Jimmy Crikey finally fit in, because he finally accepted himself. Roombelow was the home where he was most needed.
